The Imperial Constantinian

Military Order of Saint George

A History Of The Order In Colorado

In the early 1980’s, the late His Excellency General Ronald Maclennon of Maclennon, Knight Commander in the Imperial Constantinian Military Order of Saint George, was a special guest at the Longs Peak Scottish/Irish Festival where he was introduced to Dr. James Durward.

Dr. Durward was invested into the Imperial Constantinian Military Order of Saint George, as a Knight Saint George, then a Knight Officer Saint George, and finally as Knight Commander Saint George, Prior of Colorado.  In 1995, Princess Patricia Palaeologina, Supreme Grand Master of the Order, installed His Excellency Chevalier Dr. James Durward as Knight Grand Cross Saint George, the Baron of Brusa, Grand Prior of the Grand Priory for the Mountains and Plains.

Since 1990, other worthy individuals have been invested into this ancient order bringing the current total number to thirty seven.  In 1996, at the request of the Princess, the Priory became active and includes the following states:  Colorado, Kansas, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming.  In April 2006, by order of the Princess, His Excellency Chevalier Dr. James Durward, Barron of Brusa was selected as Deputy Supreme Grand Master of the imperial Constantinian Military Order of Saint George and the rank of Grand Cross and Collar Saint George.

In October 2007 two new Priory’s were established under the Grand Priory for the Mountains and Plains. They are the Priory of the Mountains and the Priory of the Plains. Senior Officers of the Grand Priory will constitute the Magisterial Council of the Grand Priory.

In 2011 His Excellency Chevalier Dr. James Durward, Baron of Bursa, Knight Grand Cross and Collar, asked to be relieved of his duty as Grand Prior of the Grand Priory for the Mountains and Plains, while remaining Deputy Grand Master of the Order. This was granted. Named to become the next Grand Prior was His Excellency Chevalier William Lowe, Count of Trebizond, Knight Grand Cross Saint George by H.I.H Princess Patricia Palaeologina. Last year, we introduced two Commandery’s to the Grand Priory for the Mountains and Plains one to be attached to each Priory; these were designated #1 Commandery of The Mountains and #1 Commandery of the plains.

In 2019 with the passing of the Grand Prior His Excellency Chevalier William Lowe, Count of Trebizond, Knight Grand Cross Saint George, His Excellency Chevalier Kevin Lowe, Knight Grand Officer Saint George was named as Grand Prior for the Grand Priory of the Mountains and Plains of the United States.

In 2023 His Excellency Alejandro "Alex" Hernandez, Knight Grand Cross Saint George was named as Grand Prior for the Grand Priory of the Mountains and Plains of the United States.

In the tapestry of our modern society, the Priories of our Order stand as steadfast guardians, wholly dedicated to the perpetuation of the time-honored values of chivalry. This commitment is not an abstract concept but a living creed, expressed tangibly through four core pillars of action.

Firstly, Family serves as the foundational unit where the virtues of loyalty, respect, and protection are first instilled and continuously nurtured. Our Priories strive to support and strengthen the family structure, recognizing it as the primary wellspring of moral and ethical character.

Secondly, Fellowship cultivates a strong sense of community and mutual support among members, fostering a brotherhood and sisterhood bound by shared ideals. Through shared activities and mutual endeavors, members learn the importance of camaraderie, integrity, and selfless cooperation, ensuring that no member stands alone.

The third pillar, Education, is paramount in equipping members, both young and old, with the knowledge and wisdom necessary to navigate the complexities of the modern world while upholding chivalric principles. This includes moral and ethical instruction, historical understanding of the chivalric tradition, and practical skills development, all aimed at producing well-rounded and principled citizens.

Finally, Community Service translates the theoretical ideals of chivalry into practical, positive action in the wider world. By dedicating time, effort, and resources to charitable and philanthropic causes, our Priories demonstrate compassion, justice, and courage—actively working to alleviate suffering and improve the quality of life for those in need, thereby serving as an active force for good in their local and global communities. This holistic dedication ensures that the spirit of chivalry remains vibrant, relevant, and impactful in the contemporary era.
